Cheng Hon Tak Jonathan
Harpsichord
Jonathan Cheng is currently pursuing a Doctor of Music in Harpsichord Performance at McGill University, studying under Elizaveta Miller. His doctoral research examines Sino-Western musical exchange during the Qing dynasty, particularly the transmission of European keyboard music at the imperial court and the activities of Teodorico Pedrini. He holds a Master of Music in Harpsichord Performance and a Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of Michigan, as well as a Graduate Certificate in Arts Entrepreneurship and Leadership.
Among Hong Kong’s most active harpsichordists and continuo players, Cheng has performed across Asia, North America, and Europe. His appearances include the Emilia Romagna Music Festival in Italy and the French May Arts Festival in Hong Kong, as well as performances at the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Basilica di Sant’Apollinare Nuovo in Ravenna. He has collaborated with distinguished musicians including Emmanuel Coppey, Alexandre Pascal, Domenico Nordio, and Léo Place-Desprez. His artistic interests encompass the French clavecin tradition, the keyboard works of Johann Sebastian Bach, and contemporary harpsichord repertoire.
Cheng founded the NHKP Baroque Chamber Orchestra in 2022 and has served as its harpsichordist and continuo player since its establishment.
